PSS "SEA CLOUD"

The "SEA CLOUD" was built 1931 as a private yacht. She has had a life full of changes. She serves in World War II, was owner by a lady, a dictator, a playboy and now finally is owner by a Hamburg based shipping company that operates her as luxury cruise ship. She is 109.5 m long and carries 3000 m² sail area. Wherever possible the old features are kept in working condition. So you can fell the spirit of the Thirties as you walk over her decks and in her passenger areas. The crew is a happy lot coming from all parts of the world and proud to work here. For me she is the most beautiful tall ship I have ever seen - and I have seen a few. In July 2009 I first joined her in the capacity of 3rd Mate.

Living on "SEA CLOUD" is like being in another world. Everything goes smooth and relaxed. You will not hear any shouting or any commands barked through a loudspeaker like on some training ships. "SEA CLOUD" is sailed by a professional crew where everybody knows what to do. Some are working here for more than 30 years now. For them "SEA CLOUD" is home and family. Also the guests keep coming back year after year.

During my first 4 months contract we sailed the Greek Islands, the Adriatic Sea, cruised Italy, went to the Cote d'Azur and back down to Malta, then Spain and finally the Canary Islands. We called places like Piraeus, Istanbul, Venice, Valletta, Palermo, Nice, Palma, Cadiz, Casablanca, anchored in romantic spots, saw volcanos erupting, met few gales and were swimming off the gangway on hot summer days. The ship yard photos were made in dry dock in Las Palmas. I worked 2 years with the "SEA CLOUD" and the ship has not lost any of her magic for me.

In winter 2010-11 "SEA CLOUD" underwent a lengthy refit to make her comply with the SOLAS 2010 standards. In May 2011 I returned a last time to "SEA CLOUD" in the capacity 2nd Mate. I was more than pleased to see that the ship has not lost any of her charme.
