After
receiving my mate's licence in Summer 2008 I sailed as 3rd officer on
container ships in the worldwide trade. The photos were taken on "HANSA
LIBERTY", a geared container carrier with a
capacity of 2478 teu. Her gross tonnage is 25369 GT. The ship was
built in Wismar/Germany and was sailing under the German flag with home
port Hamburg. She belonged to the German company Hansa Shipping.
During
my time on board "HANSA LIBERTY" was operating on liner service between
the Middle East and Far East, calling the ports Jebel Ali (Dubai)
/U.A.E., Karachi / Pakistan, Nhava Sheva (Mumbay) / India, Port Kelang
/ Malaysia, Pasir Panjang / Singapore, Chiwan / China, Kao Hsiung /
Taiwan, Busan / South Korea, Qingdao / China, Shanghai / China and
Ningbo / China. Container
shipping is a fast business. The time spent in port is minimal and
sometimes we stayed only a few hours. Especially for deck officers the
chances for going ashore are sparse, as it is our job to supervise the
cargo operations. Still I have seen a bit of the world, went through
towns I would never have visited otherwise. My favourite port is
Singapore. A very modern city with friendly people. And the best is -
almost everybody speaks English. Everything there is clean and tidy and
the port itself is fast and effective.
