STS "MIR"
The
"MIR" is a sail training ship for the Russian merchant fleet. She was
built 1987 to train the cadets of the Leningrad based Admiral Makarov
State Maritime Academy which operated her until 2015. Since then she
belongs to the Russian shipping company Sovcomflot which uses her to
train up to 140 cadets from various Russian maritime colleges. The
photos were made
during various trips and voyages on "MIR" since 1999. The "MIR" is
a fullrigged ship of 109 m LOA. She carries 2770 m² sail area and
is famous to be one of the fastest tall ships in the world. Her
speed record is 19.5 knots. Additional to the cadets she takes on board
a small number of paying trainees who may experience life on a sail
training ship.
