T/S "PELICAN OF LONDON"
The
photos were made during
my time as chief mate on "PELICAN" in Winter 2019 during a Caribbean
voyage from Puerto Limon / Costa Rica to Brest / France via Bocas del Toro / Panama,
Cienfuegos / Cuba, Key West / U.S.A., St. George and Hamilton /
Bermuda, Horta / Azores. This was part of a 6-months
charter with 30 German
high school students and their teachers in a class-afloat project
called "Ocean College". "PELICAN" has got a very unusual rigging which
is called 'Xebec' or 'Mainmast-Barkentine'. This means, she carries square
sails on the main mast and fore-and-aft sails on the fore and mizzen
masts. Her yards can be braced very sharp what allows a better windward
performance than what can be achieved on most tradional square
riggers.
"PELICAN" is a friendly ship with a highly motivated crew which
provides sail training for young people. In the on-board education
programme the trainees can qualify to competent tall ship crew members
and RYA watch leaders.
