I was born in West-Berlin and none of my family has ever been a seafarer. When I was a child we regularly spent our Summer holidays by the sea. So I saw my first tall ship at the age 6 or 7 years. Already at that time the desire formed to become a sailor. Unfortunately for girls in the Germany of the Seventies a carreer at sea was out of question. So I abandoned the idea, got married and raised a family. In 1998 my husband's brother suffered from a stroke which put him from top manager to the mental state of a 3 year old child. Being confronted with the reality that we might not have a tomorrow to live our dreams our family decided that everybody would do something he always wanted to do. That was when I booked my first voyage on a tall ship. In Spring 1999 I first sailed on the "MIR" as a trainee.

More voyages followed and a lot of voluntary work for the "MIR". Being so enthusiastic the captain and the crew there pushed me into achieving at least some yachting licences and planted the idea of becoming a professional seafarer. Since 2004 I sail full time. When within one week of my 40th birthday I lost my job and also it became evident that my husband and I would divorce I decided to go on a tall ship for a full season and find myself a new land job again at the beginning of the winter. Few weeks later I signed on as deck hand on "MARY ANNE".

Very soon I was sure that this was the kind of life I wanted to live. So I did not seek another land job on returning, but continued my sailor life as deck hand on "LORD NELSON", "JEAN DE LA LUNE", "KASKELOT" and my first cargo ship, a feeder called "CONTAINERSHIPS VI". Knowing that I would have to fund my living with my work I decided to get a mate's licence to have access to the better paid jobs.

In September 2005 I enroled in the Maritime Academy in Warnemuende/Germany to study Nautical Science. During that time I mainly sailed on cargo ships as is compulsory for getting an unlimited mate's ticket. The best experience about this were a couple of reliefs which I did on a 50 years old Baltic coaster called "BRAKE" where I really learned to manoeuvre a ship. To keep my tall ship sailing skills alive I did some voluntary work on "ROALD AMUNDSEN", "SANTA BARBARA ANNA" and "MIR". Summer 2008 I graduated with the Dipl.-Ing. degree in Maritime Transport.

After graduating I worked as OOW with the German shipping company Hansa Shipping - first on their container ships and then for 2 1/2 years on their magic sailing vessel "SEA CLOUD" and her younger sister "SEA CLOUD II". 2012 I returned to cargo ships to work with the German shipping company Reederei André Wieczorek which operates freighters in the European short sea trade. After two contracts as chief mate on their ships I was promoted captain and took over the command of the general cargo ship "MARC-ANDRÉ" where I worked until the vessel was sold.

2021 I joined the staff of the Warnemünde Nautical College as teacher for maritime law, personnel management and safe working practises. Via my self-employed business "Bythewind Nautical Services" I am available as relief freelance captain on coasters, yachts, traditional sailing vessels and NGO rescue vessels. Additionally, I am involved with the non-profit sail training ships "ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT II" and "ROALD AMUNDSEN" where I do various trips per year on a voluntary base.
